The Stakes Are High: Life-and-Death Decisions at Work

As I stated in my book Holistic Wealth Expanded and Updated, my husband made a life-and-death decision at work. He felt pain in his abdomen (a tumor erupted), but he decided to stay at work because he had a long line-up of colleagues outside his office waiting for him to check their files. He was a Finance Manager and known to be very astute with figures, one of the best in his company. That decision cost him his life – he died 3 hours later in the emergency room. There are times when we make life-and-death decisions in life – and we don’t know in that instant that our life is hanging in the balance. Like my husband, you may be feeling just a bit of discomfort – not anything serious in that moment. It’s still imperative, that even under these circumstances we have the psychological safety at work, to be able to make these quick life-saving decisions, even when we are under immense pressure. Individuals in industries like healthcare, law enforcement, aviation, and infrastructure make decisions that can affect lives daily. Even in less high-risk environments, the decisions we make—about finances, safety protocols, or even employee wellness—carry profound implications.
